FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What Causes Sun Damage?

Sun damage is caused by excess exposure to the sun and its UV (ultraviolet) radiation. UV rays from the sun can affect the surface of the skin as well as penetrating beneath the skin, causing damage to collagen fibres and changes in the skin’s appearance. This damage can also occur with exposure to UV radiation from artificial sources such as tanning beds and sunlamps. In most cases, sun damage can be prevented by regularly applying sunscreen to the face and body.

What Are the Most Common Forms of Sun Damage?

Some of the most common forms of sun damage caused by exposure to UV radiation include:

  • Sunburn – A sunburn is a thermal burn that affects the outer layer of the skin after exposure to strong UV rays. Severe sunburns can cause deep tissue damage and increase the chances of skin cancer.
  • Dry skin – Too much sun exposure can dry out the skin, causing flaking skin and a dull and lacklustre appearance.
  • Lines and wrinkles – Sun damage can result in the formation of lines and wrinkles due to cellular damage that reduces collagen production.
  • Sun spots – Also known as age spots, sun spots can appear on skin that’s repetitively exposed to UV light.
  • Freckles – Freckles often develop on the face, arms and other areas exposed to the sun, causing flat, circular spots of pigmentation to appear.
