Scarring

Scarring is a common concern that can affect the skin on various areas of the body. Below, The Greville Clinic details some useful information about scarring, including the causes, the most common types of scarring, and available treatment options.

How Do Scars Form?

Scars are the visible remnants of the body’s remarkable healing process. When the skin is injured, whether through a cut, burn or other trauma, the body initiates a complex series of events to repair the damaged tissue. Initially, blood vessels constrict to minimise bleeding, and platelets form a temporary clot. Specialised cells known as fibroblasts then migrate to the site, producing collagen to bridge the wound. This collagen matrix remodels over time, but the repaired tissue often differs in texture and colour from the surrounding skin, resulting in a scar.

Scarring is caused by a build-up of skin tissue in response to an injury that punctures the skin.

Scarring develops once the skin is healed and can have many causes, including acne, chicken pox, insect bites, burns, stretch marks, accidental cuts and scrapes, and surgery.

Scar treatment works on texture and colour, and usually needs a course rather than a single session.

Skin Needling

needling to remodel scar tissue creates controlled micro-injury within the scar, prompting the skin to rebuild more evenly.

Lumixa and LED Light Treatment

light therapy for scar colour helps the redness and discolouration of newer scars blend with the surrounding skin.

HIFU Lifting and Tightening

HIFU to firm the surrounding skin improves the laxity around a scar, which affects how visible the indentation is.

Chemical Peels

peels for scar texture resurface the outer layer, softening the texture difference between the scar and the skin around it.

Advanced Facials

clinical facial treatments maintain skin quality between resurfacing sessions.

Some of the common signs and symptoms of scarring include:

  • Changes in skin texture
  • Discolouration of the skin, such as lightening or darkening compared to surrounding skin
  • Itching or tenderness
  • Skin tightening that restricts movement
  • Persistent redness
  • Loss of function in the case of severe scarring

Many people aren’t aware that there’s more than one type of scar. Identification of scarring is important, as it can determine which treatment will be most effective. Four of the most common types of scars include:

  • Atrophic scars – Atrophic scars occur when the collagen network is disrupted due to a wound, and they appear on the skin as sunken depressions. Atrophic scarring can be caused by severe acne as well as chickenpox.
  • Contracture scars – Contracture scars occur after the skin is burned, causing the skin to tighten and restrict movement.
  • Keloid scars – Keloid scars are thick scars that protrude from the skin and can be itchy and painful. This type of scarring can grow beyond the original wound.
  • Hypertrophic scars – Hypertrophic scars are thick scars similar to keloid scars but remaining within the boundaries of the original wound.
