Rosacea is a common skin concern that can affect people generally over the age of 30, causing redness on the face as well as other symptoms. If you’re experiencing rosacea or any other form of redness on the skin, treatments are available to help reduce its appearance and achieve a more even complexion. Find out more about the signs and causes of redness and rosacea below, as well as which treatments are available to address this concern at The Greville Clinic.

Who Can Experience Rosacea?

While rosacea commonly manifests in adults between the ages of 30 and 60, it can also affect individuals in their 20s or progress into later stages of life. It’s more commonly seen in women than men, and a family history of rosacea can increase the likelihood of developing the condition. If you suspect you have rosacea or are experiencing symptoms, it’s important to seek an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Redness and rosacea typically manifest as the appearance of red skin on the face, but other areas of the body such as the neck and chest can also be affected. Common signs and symptoms of rosacea include:

  • Red or flushed skin
  • Tingling or burning of the skin
  • Rough, scaly or thickened skin
  • Visible blood vessels on the cheeks and nose
  • Eye irritation

Persistent facial redness needs treatments that calm the vessels and the inflammation behind them.

Lumixa Facials

Lumixa for reactive skin reduces background redness and strengthens the barrier, so the skin flushes less easily.

LED Therapy

LED to calm inflammation is gentle enough for sensitive skin and is often used between stronger sessions to keep redness settled.

IPL

IPL for facial redness targets the small surface vessels that cause flushing, collapsing them so the colour evens out.

Redness on the skin is often caused by rosacea, but other causes can include broken capillaries under the skin, skin conditions such as eczema, and certain medications.

Rosacea occurs when the surface of the skin experiences increased blood flow. It’s unknown why certain individuals experience rosacea, but it’s thought to have a genetic component. There are also environmental factors that can trigger the appearance of rosacea in affected individuals, some of which include:

  • Consumption of spicy foods, alcohol or caffeine
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Strenuous exercise
  • Sun and wind exposure
  • Temperature extremes
