Pigmentation Changes

Pigmentation is what gives skin its colour, but in some circumstances, a pigmentation disorder can result in unwanted pigmentation changes. Below, The Greville Clinic takes a look at the signs of pigmentation changes, some of the most common causes, and the treatment options available at our clinic.

Common Types of Pigmentation Changes

Some of the most common types of pigmentation changes include:

  • Melasma – This condition is characterised by brown or grey-brown patches on the face, often occurring on the forehead, cheeks and upper lip.
  • Sunspots or age spots – Also known as solar lentigines, these flat brown or black spots develop on sun-exposed areas of the skin due to prolonged sun exposure.
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) – This occurs as a result of inflammation or injury to the skin, such as acne, cuts or burns, leading to darkened areas.
  • Freckles – Small, concentrated areas of increased melanin production, often triggered by sun exposure. They’re more common in individuals with fair skin.

Changes in skin pigmentation can be influenced by a variety of factors, including genetics, sun exposure, hormonal changes, medications and underlying health conditions. If you notice any unusual changes in your skin pigmentation, it’s important to get your skin checked by a professional.

What Causes Changes in Pigmentation?

There can be many causes of pigmentation changes, such as melasma, hormonal changes, and even damage to the skin as a result of excess sun exposure.

Other causes include:

  • Ageing –The natural ageing process results in a loss of pigment over time, causing age spots and other pigmentation changes.
  • Genetics – It’s possible to inherit pigmentation disorders that have a genetic component, such as albinism.
  • Medications – Certain medications such as antibiotics can result in pigmentation changes as a side effect.
  • Damage to the skin – Any damage to the skin such as scarring or burns can affect pigmentation, causing changes in skin tone.

Uneven tone and dark patches respond to light-based and resurfacing treatments, often used together.

IPL Pigmentation

IPL to break down dark patches is absorbed by the excess melanin so it fragments and clears, leaving a more even tone over the following weeks.

Lumixa Skin Rejuvenation

Lumixa for overall clarity suits diffuse unevenness across the whole face rather than discrete spots.

Chemical Peels

peels for surface discolouration lift the pigmented outer layer, fading surface marks and improving evenness.

At The Greville Clinic, we offer a range of treatments to help reduce the appearance of pigmentation changes and achieve a more even skin tone. Pigmentation treatments available at our clinic include:

  • IPL Treatments
  • Lumixa and LED Light Treatment
  • Chemical Peels
  • Medical grade skin care including Pigment Serums
