Freckles are small, flat spots of pigmentation on the skin. These spots are typically harmless, although if you prefer a clearer, more even skin tone, we provide treatments designed to gently address pigmentation and restore your skin’s natural luminosity. Below, we look further into what causes freckles, where they most commonly develop, and what treatment options are recommended to reduce their appearance.

To care for freckled skin, it’s important to prioritise sun protection, as freckles are often intensified by UV exposure. Regularly apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF to shield against harmful rays. Antioxidant-rich skincare is recommended to combat potential oxidative stress and support overall skin health, while a gentle cleansing routine can help to prevent irritation, as freckled skin can be more sensitive. By taking proper care of your freckled skin, you can enjoy a healthy complexion and a radiant appearance.

Freckles are small round or oval-shaped spots on the skin that are typically uniform in colour, ranging from light tan to dark brown. They’re typically flat and do not itch, bleed or cause pain.

Freckles often appear on sun-exposed areas of the body, such as the face, arms, shoulders and upper back. They may also be found on other sun-exposed areas if you spend a lot of time in the sun. Freckles can be found in clusters or scattered across the skin, and it’s possible for them to darken or become more noticeable when exposed to the sun.

Freckles most often appear on areas of the skin that are exposed to the sun, making them particularly common on the face and arms.

Other areas where freckles can develop include:

  • Back
  • Chest
  • Hands
  • Shins
  • Shoulders

Freckles are caused by an increase in the amount of melanin in the skin – a pigment that’s responsible for skin tanning and darkening. Common causes of freckles include genetic disposition (freckles can run in families and be something you’re born with) as well as exposure to sunlight, which causes an overproduction of melanin. Those with fair skin or red hair are more likely to develop freckles. You can take steps to prevent freckles from developing by covering up when in the sun and wearing an SPF sunscreen.
