Cellulite can appear on the body due to a variety of reasons, ranging from genetics and the natural ageing process through to an individual’s hormones, body weight and skin structure. But while weight can be a contributor, you might be surprised to learn that fat deposits aren’t the reason why cellulite occurs. In fact, many people with a healthy weight can also experience cellulite.
To understand the formation of cellulite, it’s important to know how fat storage works in the body. Fat cells that store energy are found beneath the skin in compartments that connect the skin to the muscles. Smaller fat cells fit into these compartments comfortably, but when fat cells grow too large, this causes subcutaneous fat to bulge through and become visible at the surface of the skin.
