Acne is one of the most common skin condition faced by teenagers and adults across Australia. If you’re dealing with breakouts, remember that you’re in good company and expert help is available. Below, we guide you to understand what triggers your skin’s behavior and the treatments we offer to help you reclaim your glow.

Types of Acne

Acne is a common skin condition that can manifest in various forms, each with distinct characteristics and causes. The most prevalent type is acne vulgaris, which can present as whiteheads, blackheads, papules, pustules, nodules and cysts. Whiteheads and blackheads result from clogged pores due to excess oil, dead skin cells and bacteria. Papules and pustules are inflammatory lesions, while nodules and cysts are deeper and more severe, often causing painful nodules beneath the skin.

Acne can also be categorised based on its cause. For instance, hormonal acne is linked to fluctuations in hormone levels, while acne mechanica is caused by friction or pressure on the skin. Understanding the various types of acne is crucial for determining the most effective treatment.

What Are the Symptoms of Acne?

The symptoms of acne can range depending on the severity of the breakout. In early stages, acne may appear on the skin as blackheads or whiteheads, while in later stages it can progress to papules, cysts and nodules.

Common symptoms include:

  • Blackheads are open comedones, where the plug of a clogged pore is exposed to the air
  • Whiteheads are closed comedones, where the plug of a clogged pore isn’t exposed to the air
  • Papules are pus-filled pimples that occur when whiteheads or blackheads become infected
  • Cysts or nodules are deep lesions that can cause pain and scarring

The Greville Clinic offers a range of acne treatments that calm active breakouts and improve the marks they leave behind.

Skin Needling

Where breakouts have left indentations, needling to remodel acne scarring prompts the skin to rebuild collagen so the texture evens out over a course of sessions.

Lumixa

Lumixa for inflamed skin settles inflammation and lifts overall tone, which helps both the breakouts themselves and the redness that lingers afterwards.

IPL

IPL for acne and congestion targets the bacteria involved in breakouts and reduces redness around active lesions.

LED Therapy

LED light therapy for breakouts uses specific wavelengths to calm inflammation and reduce acne-causing bacteria. It is gentle enough to run alongside other treatments.

Hydrodermabrasion

hydrodermabrasion to decongest pores exfoliates and clears the build-up that contributes to breakouts, while hydrating the surface of the skin.

Chemical Peels

clinical peels for congested skin lift away the outer layer to clear congestion, reduce oiliness and fade the marks left by previous breakouts.

It’s important to determine the cause of acne where possible to help guide treatment options and prevent its reoccurrence in the future. However, acne doesn’t have one single cause. In fact, there are a number of factors that can contribute to acne. The most common causes can include:

  • Genetics – Having a history of acne in your family
  • Clogged pores – Pores that are clogged and congested with make-up or dead skin cells
  • Poor diet – Eating too much junk food or consuming a diet high in sugar and saturated fat
  • Hormones – Changes in hormones or imbalances, such as during puberty or pregnancy
  • Stress – When the body is experiencing stress or fatigue, it can be more susceptible to an acne breakout
